Released last summer, the Rainforest of the Sea Eyeshadow Palette was a huge hit, selling out within weeks of initial release (Tarte has fortunately restocked it since). So for Summer 2017, Tarte is releasing a second version aptly named the Rainforest of the Sea Vol. II Eyeshadow Palette ($47 CAD). Offering up eight brand new everyday nudes, the palette certainly has a lot to live up to. So how does it compare to the original? Read my review to find out......
Packaging:
Vol. II of the Rainforest of the Sea Eyeshadow Palette comes in a stunning shiny gold compact. The lid bears a unique coral print and the inside holds a large mirror. You get a total of eight eyeshadows, each generously weighing at 1.5g.
Formulation:
The last Rainforest of the Sea palette is simply a masterpiece so my expectations are set high for this update. With eight brand new shades, Vol. II offers up a similarly neutral theme. Half the shades are matte and half are satin shimmers. Formulation-wise, the shadows are smooth, silky, and buttery. The pigmentation for a couple of the mattes isn't as intense as I would like but the overall quality of the shadows is still very impressive. As a standalone palette, the Rainforest of the Sea Vol. II is great. However, if I were to choose between this and the original palette, I'd go with the original, both because of the better formulation and the more alluring color selection. Pearl: This is a soft pearl satin. The pigmentation is not super intense but it is buildable.
Conch: A soft cream with a slight hint of pink, Conch is a great blending shade. Despite being a matte color, the formulation is very creamy and smooth.
Sunset: This is a soft pale gold champagne. The shimmers are soft and fine.
Marina: This is a warm medium brown with a natural matte finish. Again, although the color isn't very intense, it builds to a nice coverage.
Seaside: A warm medium brown, Seaside is soft and creamy. The pigmentation is not amazing as compared to the satin shades. Nevertheless, it's buildable to a stronger intensity.
Siren: This is a rich matte chocolate brown. The color is semi-sheer but buildable.
Breezy: A gorgeous dark taupe satin, Breezy is super pigmented and buttery.
Riptide: This is an intense and pigmented soft black with a blue undertone. The satin finish is just gorgeous; this is probably my favorite shade out of the bunch!
