Maybelline Color Blur Matte Lip Pencil: Review and Swatches
For Fall 2015, Maybelline is bringing out some interesting matte lip colors called the Color Blur Matte Lip Pencils ($11.99 CAD). With a twist-up crayon on one end and a unique silicone smudger on the other, the Color Blur pencils are designed to create a soft ombre lip. How do these pencils work, read on to find out........

Packaging:
The Color Blur Matte Lip Pencils feature a twist-up crayon on one end and a silicone smudger on the other. The crayon is slightly tapered for a precise application. The smudger works well at blending the colors but I personally like to just use my fingertips. To create the ombre lips, Maybelline suggests applying the color directly to the center of the lips and then smudging it outward with the included smudger.

Formulation:
The Maybelline Color Blur Matte Lip Pencils feature ten shades and the six I have here are all very pigmented. Pigmented as these are, the formulation is not the easiest to work with. The colors don't have a cushion-y creamy texture so they really accentuate dryness and fine lines. The darker colors are good at masking the creasing but the light shaders are a lot less forgiving. As a result of the thin, dry formulation, it was really hard for me to create a nice-looking ombre effect without making my lips look super patchy. Once blended, the color feels drying and the finish is not at all transfer-proof and thus smudges easily.
I also tried applying these over well exfoliated and conditioned lips and the result is no different. These lip colors are pretty much a dry-patch detector!

10 Fast & Fuchsia: Warm medium pink
05 Pink Insanity: Cool-tone bright pink, this one clinged to dry spots the most

Overall:
I love the idea of these but I am disappointed by the formulation. The matte lip colors are incredibly pigmented but the dry, thin formulation clings to dry patches and feels silicone-y on the lips. I tried to create the ombre effect with the colors but the result was unsuccessful as the colors made my lips super dry and flakie-looking. Additionally, I am disappointed with the wear, the colors smudge easily and are not transfer-proof.

Availability:
The Color Blur Matte Lip Pencils are available starting August.
