Rimmel London The Only 1 Matte Lipstick: Review and Swatches
Earlier last year, Rimmel London released the well-received The Only 1 Lipstick collection (review and swatches here) and for Spring 2017, the brand is adding a new matte range called The Only 1 Matte Lipstick ($8.99 CAD). Offering 10 velvety matte shades, the collection is available in stores now. To see some swatches of a few colors, click......

Packaging:
The new The Only 1 Matte Lipsticks are housed in a matte red tube. The cap bears an etching of the brand's name and crown logo while a colored band on the base of the tube indicates the lipstick color inside. Instead of a classic pointed tip, the lipsticks have a flattened bullet so you may want to use a lip brush to obtain a precise application.

Formulation:
Matte lipsticks are tricky to get right but I think Rimmel has struck a nice balance between a true matte finish and a non-drying formulation. These apply very smoothly but depending on the color, the pigmentation can be patchy. There is quite a noticeable variation between the five shades I have here so read on below for a breakdown of each. In terms of hydration, The Only 1 Matte Lipsticks are reasonably comfortable while still maintaining a matte finish. My lips did feel a bit dry after a few hours but that's the tradeoff I'm willing to make for a true matte finish. Overall, these aren't the best matte lipsticks I've tried but for the drugstore price range, I'm pretty impressed. I'd definitely recommend checking out swatches before you buy, as the formulation is a bit of a mixed bag.

750 Look Who's Talking: This is a flattering medium milk chocolate. The pigmentation is decent but the coverage is slightly patchy.
500 Take the Stage: This is a gorgeous true red. The formulation is phenomenal; the pigmentation is supreme and the coverage is completely opaque in just one swipe.
110 Leader of the Pink: A pale baby pink, this shade was a lot more pigmented than I expected but there were still some wrinkling and settling of pigments in the fine lines of my lips.
800 Run the Show: This is a bold purple with a pretty patchy coverage. The color is buildable but it slides around on the lips very easily.
700 Trendsetter: A lovely neutral beige nude, 700 Trendsetter wowed me with its opaque coverage. With a color this light, I was expecting some serious creasing and patchiness but the formulation proved me wrong on both accounts.
