Kat Von D | Shade + Light Glimmer Eye Contour Palette: Review and Swatches
Kat Von D has a new palette for Fall 2017 and it takes inspiration from the original Shade + Light Eye Contour Palette released last year. Featuring 12 neutral shades with a glimmery finish, the Shade + Light Glimmer Eye Contour Palette ($64 CAD) promises to create a defined, multi-dimensional look. Packaging:
The Kat Von D Shade + Light Glimmer Eye Palette comes in a beautiful rectangular compact. The lid bears stunning three-dimensional letterings and even some raised holographic design. Inside is a large mirror framed with a dark gothic design and you get a total of 12 different shades. The palette is divided into three quads: neutral (left), cool (middle), and warm (right). You get three shades at 2.2g each, three shades at 1.5g each, and six shades at 1g each.

Formulation:
The original Shade + Light Eye Contour Palette (reviewed here) is an amazing matte neutral palette and this "Glimmer" version is sort of a shimmery take on the original as all the colors are very similar in tone (although the shade names are completely different). The top row features a more satiny finish while the bottom has a mix of satin metallics, shimmers, and glitters. The overall quality of the shadows feels very nice; the colors are creamy, smooth, and highly blendable. However, I did notice that a few shades don't wear as intense as they swatch. See below for a detailed breakdown.

Porcelain: This is a soft natural ivory with a subtle sheen.
Dusk: This is a light satin taupe. Again, the color has a soft pearly sheen.
Dune: A light dusty peach, this shade is very smooth and pigmented.

Copper: This is a satin light brown. The formulation is very even and creamy.
Bronze: A medium brown metallic, Bronze has noticeable chunks of brown glitter. There's definitely some fall out with this one.
Sterling: This is a gorgeous shimmery pearly white. The pigmentation is on the sheerer side since the shadow is mostly just shimmers.

Cinder: A beautiful dark cool brown, Cinder is very pigmented and buttery.
Onyx: This is a satin black formulated with a dash of silver sparkles. The color is buildable but it's definitely on the patchier side.
Glacier: A gorgeous pearly shimmer, Glacier is a smoother, more satin-y version of Sterling.

Rust: A stunning warm brown, Rust is incredibly pigmented and creamy when swatched. However, when I tried to use it in the crease on top of Dune, the color just didn't show up as I'd imagine. I layered on quite a bit but someone how the intensity just doesn't translate.
Jasper: A medium brown metallic, Jasper is sprinkled with a dash of sparkly golden shimmers. The pigmentation is not as intense as I would have liked but the color is definitely buildable.
Quartz: This is a very pretty rosy pink glitter. Unfortunately, the formulation is extremely chunky and fallout-prone. I tried to dab some on the middle of my lid (see the look below) and 95% of the shadow landed on my cheeks instead of adhering to my lids. You can probably make this work with a good shadow primer or use it wet but all in all, the formulation is good.

Below is a look I did using Porcelain, Dune, Rust, Quartz, and Jasper. The majority of the shades performed really well but as you can see, Quartz barely showed up because it just didn't adhere to my lids at all. Instead, it landed all over my cheeks, which required some serious clean-up. Additionally, Rust somehow lost its intensity when blended on top Dune. With that said, I still like how it applied. All the shades with the exception of Quartz blended seamlessly.

Overall, I think this is a nice palette. A few of the colors are definitely flawed but the majority of the shades are creamy and pigmented. The overall color scheme is very natural and highly wearable. If you like neutrals but don't love mattes then this is a great alternative to the original Shade + Light although I think the two palettes would actually work very well together!
