Sephora + Pantone Color of the Year 2016 Rose Quartz & Serenity Collection: Review and Swatches

For me, it's always a monumental moment when sneak peeks of the new Sephora + Pantone Color of the Year Collection are released. For 2016, there are not one but two colors of the year: a light lavender-blue called "Serenity" and a pale baby pink called "Rose Quartz". Both shades are very gorgeous but I do admit I'm a little hesitant about how they will translate into makeup colors. Nevertheless, let us take a look at the some swatches or this collection......

Sephora + Pantone Modern Watercolors Eye Palette ($49.00 CAD):
Housed in a very beautiful plastic white palette, the Modern Watercolors Eye Palette comes with a huge mirror and 24 shadows weighing 1g each. Although inspired by watercolors, the front of the lid is printed with an Impressionism-style oil painting. The quality of the packaging is really great; it feels heavy-duty but it's not chunky or clumsy.

This palette definitely has some of the most unique colors I've seen in a while. Unfortunately, though, most of the shadows have a very thin, chalky, dry, and sheer formulation. With the exception of a few neutral shimmers, the formulation feels slightly inferior to the usual Sephora brand shadows. I love the variety of pastels and the good mix of shimmers and mattes, but the formulation is simply not great.

Sephora + Pantone Universe Modern Watercolors Lip Gloss Set ($35 CAD):

This is a set of sheer lip glosses in six interesting watercolor-inspired shades. Housed in very sleek and angular clear gloss tubes with coordinating colored caps, the glosses have a creamy and fairly non-sticky formulation. The colors are all creams with no shimmers or glitters. A couple of the shades are very wearable but the rest are too avant garde for my taste. Unless you have very pale lips, the lighter gloss shades end up very patchy.

Sephora + Pantone Color of the Year 2016 Matte Lipsticks

Sephora + Pantone Universe Color of the Year Matte Lipsticks in "Serenity" & "Rose Quartz" ($23 CAD each):
A pale blue and a pale pink, these two Matte Lipsticks are definitely the most interesting items from the collection. They come in a very pretty ombre baby blue and pink rectangular cases. With a fairly pigmented formulation, the two shades are pretty creamy with a satin (not matte) finish.
I like to think that I can be pretty adventurous when it comes to beauty trends, but I honestly can't embrace these two lip colors. The two shades simply do not compliment my skin tone. Both make me feel like I am an outer-space alien with scary chalky lips. I tried pairing these two together and they look slightly better but nevertheless, this trend is too daring for me.
