Tarte | Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Full Coverage Foundation: Review and Swatches
Just in time for the summer season, the Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Full Coverage Foundation ($51 CAD for 50 ml) is now available in 40 shades. Providing an SPF of 15, this is a lightweight and breathable high-coverage foundation with a natural matte finish. I've been giving it a test drive recently and want to share with you my review today. To read on, click......

Packaging:
The Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Full Coverage Foundation comes in a convenient squeeze tube paired with a simple spout opening. Additionally, the foundation has a bamboo-covered cap, giving the product a very natural aesthetic.

Formulation:
Formulated with Amazonian clay (for a natural matte finish) and titanium dioxide and zinc oxide (for an SPF of 15), the Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Full Coverage Foundation has a rather thick and whipped texture that reminds me of a bit of a silicone-based primer. While swatching the foundation shades on my arm, I became quite worried as the product seemed dry, solid, and tricky to blend. Fortunately, however, the product applied just fine on the skin. Despite having a thicker, non-fluid texture, it blended seamlessly without emphasizing pores or fine lines. With that said, I do have oily skin so the same may not be true for those with dry skin. Tarte advertises this as a full-coverage foundation and although it masks most imperfections, the pigmentation is medium to full but not comparable to the likes of Lancome Teint Idole (reviewed here) or Urban Decay All Nighter (reviewed here). The finish is semi-matte and for those with dry skin, a powder will probably not be needed. However, because I have oily skin, my T-zone still looked a bit shiny with this foundation so I used a light dab of setting powder to ensure that everything stays put.

The new shade extension puts the selection at 40 in total and I have here some of the lighter shades. Each shade has a neutral, warm, or cool undertone but their names and descriptions are not always accurate so I'd definitely recommend color-matching in stores to determine your perfect shade. For my NC15 skin, "13N Ivory" turned out to be the best fit. Despite being described as a neutral color, the shade has a slightly warmer undertone that matched my complexion well.

08 Porcelain Beige: Very light porcelain with a pink undertone.
12S Fair Sand: Light sand color with a fairly neutral undertone.
12B Fair Beige: Light ivory with a pink undertone.
13N Ivory: Light ivory with a neutral to slightly yellow undertone.
16B Ivory: Light beige with a neutral to pink undertone.
12H Fair-Light Honey: Beige with warm undertones.
22S Light Sand: Beige with a slightly more neutral undertone in comparison to 12H.

The foundation does a really nice job at blurring pores and covering blemishes and despite the silicone-heavy formulation, it doesn't pill or feel heavy on the skin. In terms of wear, most parts of my face remained flawless and reasonably shine-free except for my nose, chin, and mouth area. For the nose, there was noticeable fading where patches of foundation literally disappeared and a lot of pigments ended up collecting around the creases. For the mouth and chin area, where I tend to get a little dry, the foundation settled in the pores, emphasizing skin texture and making things appear drier. All in all, this had the potential to be a really good foundation. If you are like me and have dry, oily, or combination skin, the foundation probably won't wear very well. However, if you have normal to the slightly oily skin, you probably won't experience any of the issues I addressed and will enjoy the foundation's smooth coverage and lightweight, breathable texture.
