on the blog so I'm pretty out of touch with new releases and innovations from the brand. Therefore, I wanted to take a look at a couple of somewhat recent offerings from Shiseido in the form of the
Eudermine Activating Essence and the
Essential Energy Hydrating Cream. To read more about both, click......
Released all the way back in 1897, the Eudermine essence from Shiseido recently got a total revamp with an updated formulation and a brand-new packaging. Those familiar with the old Eudermine Revitalizing Essence know it by its iconic rectangular red glass bottle, which has now been replaced with a sturdy refillable plastic bottle. The new manufacturing process also forms and fills the bottle in the same step, which significantly reduces carbon emissions during production. Refills of the Eudermine Activating Essence are sold separately for C$98.
Sharing a similar base formulation as the original, the new Eudermine Activating Essence now contains two different types of hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, kefir extract, and yuzu extract. The essence has a runny, slightly serum-y consistency that easily spreads and absorbs onto the skin. Despite the reformulation, the essence still contains a significant amount of alcohol (second ingredient) and it remains heavily fragranced, which may be sensitizing to some. Overall, if you enjoyed the original Eudermine Revitalizing Essence, then you will probably love this new version with its added hydration and brightening benefits. However, if you are sensitive to fragrances and alcohol in skincare, this may not be the product for you.

In line with their initiative to be more eco-friendly, the packaging is refillable (refills sold separately for C$58 each). With a fairly viscous cream consistency, the Essential Energy Hydrating Cream has a pleasant floral fragrance. The formulation blends easily on the skin and quickly absorbs, leaving behind a natural, non-greasy finish. Unfortunately, this cream contains both dimethicone (second ingredient) and alcohol (fourth ingredient). I feel that despite its obvious efforts to attract younger consumers over the years, Shiseido seems reluctant to update its formulation to reflect the preferences of the current market, which is more ingredient-focused versus brand-focused. As most brands steer away from drying alcohols, heavy fragrances, and silicones, Shiseido seems pretty set in its ways. Personally, I know Shiseido has loyal customers who will never stray; however, if Shiseido is truly seeking to expand its clientele, it needs to take a hard look at some of its ingredient selections.
